Head Office

Administration, development, co-ordination and the formation of rules and regulations take place in the head office of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration in Mørkhøj near Copenhagen.

Furthermore the Meat Inspection Unit is part of the head office, but placed in Vejle in the eastern part of Jutland. The Meat Inspection Unit monitors whether food laws are complied with during the slaughter of the animals, the cutting of the meat and the processing of meat and meat products at slaughterhouses and meat product companies. Animal Health Division
This division is responsible for:

  • Monitoring and combating exotic livestock diseases such as foot and mouth, hog cholera and Newcastle disease.
  • Other livestock diseases in cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, fur-bearing animals, poultry and fish.
  • BSE/TSE (monitoring and control in relation to herds and flocks).
  • Monitoring and control of classic zoonoses (diseases that spreads between animals but can cause illness in humans).
  • Registration and identification of livestock.
  • Veterinary preparedness: strategic and operational contingency planning.
  • VetAlert a computer system for handling suspected cases and actual outbreaks of livestock diseases.
  • National trade in live animals.
  • Validation and certification of enterprises that process non-food.
  • Certification of zoological gardens and farms open to visitors.

Control Coordination Division
This division is responsible for:

  • Control principles and strategies.
  • Veterinary and food control in general, including the development of tools for the regional centres to ensure uniform quality in their performance of the control effort.
  • Instructing the regional veterinary and food control centres in general inspection matters.
  • Supervision of the regional veterinary and food control centres.
  • Case follow-up in relation to the inspection performed by the regional veterinary and food control centres.

International Trade Division
This division is responsible for:

  • Control of trade, including the import and export of live animals, semen, eggs, embryos, foodstuffs and non-food products.
  • Travel with pets.

  • Serving as a contact point for the Rapid Alert System.
  • Keeping lists of enterprises certified for exporting products to specific third countries.
  • Planning and organising inspection visits and international inspection procedures.

  • Coordinating the Administration's tasks in Greenland, including the Greenland Veterinary Service.
  • Coordination of the telephone on-call scheme for acute queries outside normal opening hours.

Division for Microbiological Food Safety, Hygiene and Zoonoses Control
This division is responsible for:

  • Strategies and action plans to combat pathogens such as campylobacter in foodstuffs and salmonella and salmonellosis in foodstuffs and livestock.

  • Tracing the route of infection in the event of food-borne illnesses.
  • Hygiene, fitting up and operation of food companies.
  • Hygiene training.
  • Authorisation and registration of food companies.
  • BSE/TSE (food safety).

Division for Chemical Food Safety, Animal Welfare and Veterinary Medicinal Products
This division is responsible for:

  • Control with the use of veterinary medicinal products, including herd health consultancy agreements.
  • Tracing in the event of chemically-associated food-borne illnesses.
  • Medicine squad for control with illegal use of veterinary medicinal products. 
  • Chemical contamination of food, including dioxin, heavy metals, pesticides and veterinary medicines.

Division for Food Quality, Techonology and Marketing Practices
This division is responsible for:

  • Livestock.
  • Zootomic science (breeding conditions).

  • Product standards, trade norms and market schemes. 
  • Genetic engineering and other novel foods.
  • Irradiation of foodstuffs.
  • Additives in foodstuffs, including aromatics and enzymes.
  • Marketing of foodstuffs, including misleading information.
  • Labelling of food products.
  • Specific labelling schemes, including schemes regarding beef, geographic designations, designations of origin and specificities.
