Seasonally vector-free period

3 December 2010: Denmark has declared vector-free period as from 1 December 2010. This is based upon catches of low numbers of Culicoides sp. in the vector surveillance and the cold weather.

25 May 2010: The seasonally vector-free period ends in Denmark at midnight between 26 and 27 May 2010. The vector surveillance has now trapped insects of the Culicoides sp., including individuals that were blood fed.
Based on the weather prognosis it is expected that the vector activity will increase.

3 December 2009: Denmark has declared vector-free period as from 1 December 2009. This decision is based upon the catches of low numbers of culicoides and cold weather. In the weeks 45 to 48, decreasing numbers of parous culicoides were caught. In week 47 were caught in total 21 parous culicoides, however, in week 48 in total were caught only two. The temperatures in the following week so far have shown maximum temperatures around 10 degrees Celsius and at least two nights with frost, followed by temperatures around the freezing point.
The Danish restriction zone which include the entire country is considered as a bluetongue seasonally vector free zone from 1 December 2009 until the end of the vector free period.

21 April 2009: The seasonally vector-free period ends in Denmark at midnight between the 24 and the 25 April 2009. This is based upon the weather prognosis with temperatures near or above 10 oC, which means that local temperatures could be markedly higher favouring development of Culicoides. In addition to this the surveillance of Culicoides now has trapped insects of the Culicoides sp., including individuals that were blood fed.

9 December 2008: Denmark has declared vector-free period from 1 December 2008. This decision is based upon vector catches which has shown in total three parous culicoides in 56 catches from week 46 to week 49. The temperatures in the period from week 46 to week 49 show maximum temperatures around or well below 10 degrees Celsius, and at least three nights with frost.

The Danish restiction zone which includes the entire country is considered as a bluetongue seasonally vector free zone from 1 December 2008 until the end of the vector free period.

In the winter 2007/2008 the seasonally vector-free period was from 21 December 2007 to 8 April 2008.
