Chronology of major bluetongue relevant events
  • 22. January 2010: The vaccination strategy against bluetongue has changed from a compulsory strategy in 2008 and 2009 to a voluntary strategy in 2010.

  • December 2009: The seasonally vector-free period in Denmark is declared as from 1 December 2009. This is based upon the catches of low numbers of culicoides and cold weather.

  • 24 April 2009: End of the vector-free period in Denmark.
  • 13 February 2009: Nationwide bluetongue vaccination campaign aginst BTV-8 starts on 15th February 2009.
  • 9 December 2008: Denmark has declared vector-free period from 1 December 2008.

  • 12 September 2008: IAH-Pirbright have today confirmed the results of the sequence analysis of the Danish National Veterinary Institute that the serotype of the virus from the herd near Bredebro is BTV-8.

  • 7 October 2008: The vaccination are was expanded to also cover the following municipalities: Billund, Hedensted, Herning, Holstebro, Horsens, Ikast-Brande, Odder, Samsø, Silkeborg, Skanderborg, Varde, Vejle, Viborg og Århus.
  • 11 September 2008: The protection zone was enlarged to cover the whole country and the vaccination area was expanded to also cover the municipality Ringkøbing-Skjern.
  • 23 July 2008: Start of the vaccination campaign against BTV-8.
  • 8 April 2008: End of the vector-free period in Denmark.
  • 21 December 2007: Start of the vector-free period in Denmark.
  • 21 December 2007: The outbreak area at the islands Lolland and Falster has been lifted.
  • 13 December 2007: The Danish restriction zone has been further enlarged due to a fourth outbreak of bluetongue i the northern part of Germany.
  • 18 October 2007: Enlargement of the Danish restriction zone due to a third outbreak of bluetongue in the northern part of Germany.
  • 13 October 2007: First bluetongue outbreak in Denmark. The outbreak occurred at a sheep herd near Sakskøbing on the island of Lolland south of Zealand. The affected herd consists of 100 breeders and 150 lambs. Only one animal showed clinical signs such as fever, respiratory disorder, salivation and erosion in the oral cavity. The affected animal died less than 48 hours after showing clinical signs. The herd were put under restrictions. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration established an outbreak area and a restriction zone. The restrictions in the zones include movement restrictions.
  • 2 October 2007: Enlargement of the Danish restriction zone due to another outbreak of bluetongue in the northern part of Germany.
  • 17 September 2007: Establishment of the first restriction zone in Denmark due to an outbreak of bluetongue in the northern part of Germany.
