Animal Health
The Danish Food and Veterinary Administration has responsibility for prevention and control of animal diseases in Denmark. The veterinary alert system plays an important part in this. The purpose of the alert system is to control infectious animal diseases and zoonoses such as salmonella and campylobacter.

- Bluetongue, as Denmark experienced 15 outbreaks of bluetongue virus serotype 8 in cattle and sheep in 2008;
- Low pathogenic avian influenza, as the infection was detected in a Danish holding with breeding geese, ducks and mallards in 2008;
- BSE, as Denmark was recognised by the OIE as a country with a controlled BSE risk.

as well as details on the following three main topics:
- Bluetongue, as Denmark detected the first outbreak of bluetongue
ever reported in the country in October 2007;
- Myxomatosis, as a large number of outbreaks occurred
this year in Danish pet rabbits; and
- BSE, as the OIE Scientific Commission recommended that
Denmark should be recognised as a controlled BSE risk
country.
