Infected with campylobacter?

The symptoms of campylobacter infection are stomachache, diarrhoea, and nausea and sometimes fever. The symptoms may kick in 2-10 days after you have eaten the food infected with campylobacter. The illness usually lasts one week but it can last several weeks.

If you become sick with campylobacter you will probably be well in a few days and there is no need to seek medical help. If you are vomiting or having diarrhoea, it is important to drink a lot of fluids in order to avoid dehydration.

When should you seek medical help?
If the illness becomes serious or is prolonged you should seek medical help. If you suspect that a specific foodstuff causes the infection, a doctor can make a report to the health inspector who will know if other people from the same city or council have been infected.

Asides from calling the doctor, you – or your doctor – can contact the nearest regional food authority, which will be able to help determine the cause of the disease.

A few bacteria is all it takes
It only takes a few amount of campylobacter bacterium to make you sick – 500 bacteria can be enough.
