Where can campylobacter be found and which foodstuffs can make you sick?
You can get campylobacter infection via e.g. poultry, beef, pork, polluted drinking water and unpasteurised milk. Some may also fall ill after contact with cats or dogs.
Various surveys suggest that poultry – particularly refrigerated chicken – is the most significant source of infection. Refrigerated products mean products that have not been frozen.
The Foodstuff Institute at Denmark’s Technical College estimates that imported refrigerated chicken contribute to illness caused by campylobacter to a larger degree than Danish chicken.
There is campylobacter in various foodstuffs because the bacterium is widely spread in nature and is common in the intestine of many animals.
