Food contact materials and articles

Food contact materials and article shall comply with the legislation in the area, and the industry and trade are responsible for their products and for having appropriate documentation and in-house documentationl.

The legislation is in Danish, but the majority of requirements are implemented from legislation harmonised in EU, and therefore found in the official EU languages on the Commission webpage.

Denmark has national legislation on glass, porcelain and other ceramic products than ceramics. The requirements are maximum limits for lead and cadmium, including requirements for migration from the mouth rind.

Furthermore, there are specific legislation on the use of bisphenol A in some food contact materials. For more information, see the press releases linked to under legislation on this page.

In-house control and documentation.

In-house documentation shall confirm compliance of the food contact materials with the Danish legislation. The producer or importer of FCM are responsible for etablishing appropiate documentation.

Declarations of compliance and documentation shall cover the legal requirement, the specific uses, migration etc. Check lists for the diffent sectors from producers of chemicals, via producers/importers of food contact materials and articles to the food indutry and importers and the retails are elaborated in the Nordic corporation, see the link under reports.

Registration of producers and importers of FCM.
The public food inspection controls all links in the chain from producer or importer of food packaging to the retails by random checkingProducers and importers of FCM shall be registred at the regional food inspection units.

The compagnies shall have documentation and quality assurance in accordance with the requirements in the EU regulation on good manufacturing practise (GMP).
