How many are infected with salmonella?
In 2008 almost 3,700 people were infected with salmonella in Denmark. There has, however, been a decline since 1997 where 5,000 were infected with salmonella. This figure only includes those registered by Statens Serum Institut and it is estimated that the actual figure is probably 10-20 times higher because many do not seek medical help.
The figure below illustrates the amount of salmonella infections from 1980 and onwards.

Many types of Salmonella
There are about 2,000 different types of salmonella that can lead to disease. Most people get infected with salmonella enteritidis and salmonella typhimurium, but there are also many cases of e.g. salmonella infantis and salmonella dublin. In 2008 there was a nationwide outbreak where a lot of people fell ill from salmonella typhimurium U292.
