Where can salmonella be found and which foodstuffs can make you sick?

You can get salmonella infection via numerous foodstuffs, in particular eggs poultry, pork, beef and unpasteurised milk. There can also be salmonella in fish, shellfish and vegetable foodstuff, e.g. raw vegetables.

If you fall sick with salmonella, you have probably eaten food infected with salmonella and the food has not been properly heated or it has been stored in a too warm environment. You can e.g. be infected by eating desserts made of raw eggs or by eating beef or poultry that has not been fried thoroughly.

Keeping score of the source of infection
The Zoonosis Centre keeps score of the source of salmonella infection. It is an overview of the various foodstuffs that have infected people with salmonella and they are illustrated in the diagram below.

The diagram is based on 1,658 people infected with salmonella in 2006. You can see the various foodstuffs that caused the infections
