Food Safety
The Veterinary and Food Administration's main purpose is to ensure the safety and high quality of food, to advise on healthy eating habits and to protect the consumers against misleading marketing of food.
In order to prevent chemical or bacteriological contamination of the food the Veterinary and Food Administration sets the national limit to the content of chemicals such as pesticide, dioxin and pharmaceuticals and undesirable bacteria such as salmonella and campylobacter.
The consumers have the right to be given thecorrect and accurate information about the content of foods. The Veterinary and Food Administration sets the standards for informative labelling and description of contents.
The Veterinary and Food Administration also surveys the Danish people´s state of health and nutrition and gives guidance and advice on healthy food and eating habits.
The Danish food control is based on the principle of own-check programmes and control visits in restaurants, shops and food manufacturers. The shops and restaurants are responsible for complying with the food legislation and the evaluation results are published in shops and restaurants in the form of the so called smiley´s.
