Travelling from Denmark

TRAVELLILNG FROM DENMARK TO OTHER EU MEMBER STATES
On July 3, 2004 common EU regulation regarding non-commercial transport of dogs, cats and ferrets came into force.
It means that in import requirements are the same for all EU Member States except for Ireland, Malta, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Which countries are EU Member States?

Pet passport and rabies vaccination
Besides ID the animal must have an EU Pet passport. The passport is in Denmark issued by your veterinarian and is valid only if it is certified that the animal has been vaccinated againt rabies.

It is important, that the most recent rabies vacciation date is not prior to the date of identification. The animal may however, be micorchipped or tattoo and rabies vaccinated on the same day.

Valid rabies vaccination
The primary rabies vaccination must be given at least 21 days prior to departure. If the animal already has a rabies vaccination, which is still valid, it is not necessary to redo the vaccination.
If revaccinated in accordance with the recommendations of the manufactor of the vaccine departure may take place immediately.

The rabies vaccination is valid in accordance with the recommendations of the manufactor of the vaccine.
In Denmark Rabisin is the typical choice of vaccine and according to the manufactor of Rabisin, revaccination should take place within 3 years. However, animals under 1 year of age, which are vaccinated with Rabisin must be revaccinated within 1 year and then after this within 3 years.
If your animal was vaccinated in another country make sure to ask the veterinarian about the recommendations of the rabies vaccination used.

If the most recent rabies vaccination was done prior to July 3, 2004, revaccination should occur in accordance with the old import requirement, ie. after 1 year.

So, when travelling from Denmark to EU

  • Microchip or tattoo
  • EU Pet Pasaport
  • Valid rabies vaccination

TRAVELLILNG FROM DENMARK TO THIRD COUNTRIES
Third countries means countries other than EU Member States.

The veterinary authorities of the third country lays down the import requirement for dogs, cats and ferrets. The requirements may vary from country to country.
Some countries requires that one must apply for an import permit. Other requires the animal placed in quarantine and yet others have requirement quite the same af for travelling to other EU Member States.
Therefore, make sure to enquire about the import requirements in time prior to departure.

Where will I find the import requirements of the third country?
For some third countries the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has the relevant information.
On the List of countries, Part B and Part C and the countries listed under Other Countries links to the specific import requirement or to the website of the veterinary authority of the country may be found.
List of countries.

If there is no links please contact the embassies in either the third country or the country's representation here in Denmark.
Link to the website of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If the veterinary authority of the third country requires an official document (eg. a veterinary certificat or a certificat of origin and health etc.) is issued and certified by an official veterinarian or the competent veterinary authority of Denmark, you must contact your Regional Veterinary and Food Administration.

Before you bring your dog, cat or ferret to a third country
Hvis you are travelling to a third country, which has fewer import requirements than the EU and therefore Denmark does, it may be to your advantage to make sure, that your dog, cat or ferret complies with the EU regulation before leaving Denmark. This way you are sure that you animal may be imported back into Denmark (or the EU) and you will not have to visit a veterinarien while on vacation.
