EU Animal-passport

How long will it take for me to get a passport for my dog or cat after it has been vaccinated?
- The Pet Passport can be issued at the same time your dog or cat gets vaccinated. But please remember that you will not be able to import your pet until 21 days after det primary rabies vaccination. However if the animal is revaccinated in accordance with the recommendation you may import the animal straight away.

Should the passport hold a picture of my dog?
- A photo is not compulsory so it is up to you whether you want a photo of your pet in the passport.

For how long will the pet passport remain valid?
- The passport can be used as long as your pet lives. But it is only valid if it contains valid vaccination details.

The Seaway/Airway company does not allow pets on board, what do I do then?
- It is the company alone that decides if they will allow pets on board. The veterinary authorities does not regulates this. Some sea- and airway does allow pets on board, so make sure to ask, before you book your ticket.

Do I have to bring the passport to the vet if my cat, dog or ferret is to be revaccinated?
- Yes, you must bring the passport every time your pet is vaccinated against rabies.

Does the requirements for non-commercial transport of pets comply if a company specializing in pet travel arrange the transport of my pet?
- No, because then your pet will not be accompanied by you as the owner or a natural person acting on your behalf. In such cases the transport is considered commercial.

Is the vet the only person who can issue a pet passport?
- In Denmark, the pet passport has to be filled in and stamped by an authorised veterinarian.

It is possible to register my dog's puppies in her passport in the same way as my daughter is registered in my passport?
- No, puppies need their own passports. Passports for puppies are also issued by the vet.

What is a ferret - is it the same as a fitchew?
- Yes, a ferret is also called a fitchew.

How much does a passport cost?
- The price of the passport depends on the price of issue and the vet's fee incl. rabies vaccination.

Do I have to pay for a new passport if I lose it?
- Yes, you have to pay every time a new passport is issued.

As from 27 May 2010 it will only be possible to travel with max. 5 animals of the species dogs, cats or ferrets, also when travelling within the EU.


If you travel with more than five animals of these species the animal health requirements for commerciel movement applies.
